Select Floc Dewatering Unit
KEMTRON’s Select Floc™ is a portable polymer hydration system for use in dewatering drilling fluids waste and other oilfield water and wastewater treatment applications. When operated in conjunction with KEMTRON’s line of centrifuges or with existing solids control assets, the Select Floc™ becomes the brain-center for precise and accurate dewatering. KEMTRON’s Select Floc™ system not only maximizes the use of our existing dewatering assets, but it provides the necessary tools to improve dewatering efficiency and polymer consumption, therefore significantly reducing operating costs.
Hydration – The Key to Dewatering Performance
Prior to adding coagulant and flocculant to the used drilling fluid, each polymer must be activated, a process commonly referred to as “make-down.” Activating each polymer involves mixing water into, or hydrating, a concentrated or neat form of the polymer and then allowing sufficient residence time for the hydrated polymer to uncoil or branch out.
Improper make-down of the polymers results in reduced dewatering efficiency and excessive use of the neat polymer materials. In the worst case, an improperly hydrated coagulant fails to destabilize solids in the drilling fluid. Similarly, an improperly conditioned flocculant fails to aggregate the destabilized solids. Either way, the dewatering process fails to reclaim acceptable water from the used drilling fluid and discharge sufficiently dry “cake solids”.
Controlling Key Physical Variables
Though hydration is the cornerstone of ensuring optimal polymer performance, both shear and temperature must be closely managed. Polymers typically used in dewatering drilling fluid are sensitive to shear and temperature. Adequate water pressure and temperature improves mixing of the polymers and reduces the time required for hydration. To stabilize the water pressure and ensure the proper system temperature, the Select Floc™ is equipped with a “booster pump” and in-line immersion heaters. This allows the system to be used in the most extreme weather environments and ensures that the Select Floc™ yeilds optimum results.
